The Brady Box

Here’s a story… of a vintage tech hack.

It started with a little orange Sharp TV that our friends gave to us. They knew we like to do art hacks, so we were thrilled. We researched the TV, and learned that it came out in 1969. Upon further research, we learned that the Brady Bunch first aired in September of 1969. Jackpot! That was Mandy’s favorite TV show as a kid, so this felt like the perfect project. Aaron set to work gutting the old, non-working hardware, and replacing with a small Eyoyo monitor and Aptek media player. All in a custom built internal cage painted Brady blue. We loaded it with about 2 hours of our favorite Brady scenes, and the Brady Box was born. Just flip the switch and it plays clips on a loop forever. Then we brainstormed ideas to promote it. What if we turned part of our kitchen into the Brady kitchen set? We scoured the internet for photos of the original kitchen, and gathered materials for the build. With foam core, orange and avocado green paint, faux wood contact paper, and groovy props from local vintage stores, we transformed our kitchen into that familiar Brady set piece. Mandy ordered a Brady-esque dress and shoes from Etsy, and we put together some videos for our Instagram account. The TV is for sale, with all profits to be donated to the buyer’s local Boys and Girls Club.
